a perfumed journal of aerial vistas

February 26, 2009

Lustrous, velvety silk of a niveous hue has been snugly wrapped around supple leather to create the flexible, yet protective covers of this delicate journal. The fabric on the front has been expertly painted to depict a breathtaking vista of aerial gardens against a halcyon sky, the dyes not diminishing the smoothness of the silk the least bit. The three-tiered clouds rise majestically across the firmament, their crispness clearest at the uppermost levels where neither nebulous rain nor speckled on in golden paint dew obscures sight. Glimpses of wooden pathways and colourful blossoms emerge from amongst eddies of silvery dusted mist on each level, the paints vivid and the lines sharp to denote these. A slender female trill gardener holding close a large hat stands in the foreground of the bottom right corner, the downy, dove grey feathers of her wings stirred by the wind and her daydreaming face turned upwards to the left. The stitching of the ivory leather spine of the journal has been concealed with a satin ribbon, a gleaming golden embroidery declaiming the author and title on the side in flowing calligraphy. Within, the pages are of creamy-hued vellum ornamented with translucent illustrations of various exotic flowers, diaphanous butterflies and aerial birds. A wide ribbon of pearly satin wraps around the journal securely on a fragile crystal bottle which suffuses the air with an invigorating floral fragrance.

a slim journal wrapped in plum silk

December 28, 2008

Smooth, shining plum silk wraps the slim wooden cover of this delicate journal. Delicate embroidery in tarnished silver chases across the front of the volume, depicting interweaving vines of amaranth that open in clockwork blossoms. Miniscule, cog-toothed petals are shed in a gentle shower across the plum background, trailing across the steel title plate in an acid-etched cascade.

an absinthe green journal wrapped in silk

December 28, 2008

Smooth silk dyed the colour of undiluted absinthe wraps the hardened wooden cover of this book, the surface riddled with minute motes of peridot that swirl together with silver stitches to form a silvery wormwood leaf. Silver guards stamped with the images of slotted absinthe spoons protect the silk-wrapped corners, and a delicate locking mechanism reaches from top to bottom cover at the right side of the book, similarly adorned with a motif of elegantly moulded utensils. Within, the pages of the booklet are a uniform ivory, lightly decorated with curling flourishes of ink at the top and bottom of each page.

a ghostly journal of bloody waltzes

December 28, 2008

Spectres of red blood clad in gowns and robes of their own flesh whirl in stately mien across the polished black marble of this journal’s covers, graven in slender lines of red enamel and glittering gold. Tarnished black steel wire punctures the lefthand edge of the covers, binding together stone and paper – a ribbon of tattered gold silk is tied at the centre of this unusual spine, wrapping thrice the cover before knotting around a black jade pawn.

a blood-red journal of silver cherry blossoms

December 27, 2008

The stiff wooden cover of this slender journal is covered in shining red silk printed with curving cherry branches that shed copious petals across the front of the book. Shining garnets outline sanguine blossoms within the whirling silver, following elegant black stitching that declaims in curving calligraphy the name of the author and the title of the book. Within, the pages are creamy white, and touched at each corner with a crimson petal.

a wire-bound journal of enamelled steel

December 27, 2008

Thin plates of steel protect the pages of this slender journal, their surfaces embossed with the curving lines of a stylised viscanti woman, nude but for the impression of a translucent toga and a winding vine of roses that lends a note of prurience to her voluptuous form. Crimson enamel lines the petals of the delicate blossoms, standing out sharply from within the acid-etched engravings – the woman herself is burnt black from the process, standing out sharply from the polished metal cover. Barbed and wound tightly at the spine, a length of razor-sharp wire winds through holes at the edge of the covers and the ivory pages of the book, uniting the components into a solid whole. The scent of sharp oils and resinous incenses compounded with brimstone rises from the journal, lingering in the air.

a perfumed journal of rust-coloured silk

December 27, 2008

This slender volume is bound in rust-coloured silk stretched over thin wooden panels that provide a sturdy binding for the ivory pages within. A thick ribbon of yellowing, ivory-hued silk wraps around the cover and pages, hung with tiny silver chimes. The length of fabric wraps tightly around a vial of crushed rose petals and spices at one end that, despite a wooden cork, serve to suffuse the air around the journal with an intoxicating scent. Within, the pages are threaded with gold and saffron and stamped with gold foil that bears the images of multifarious roses set with glittering motes of crushed diamond.

a slim journal bound in merian hide

September 21, 2008

This slim journal is a study in careful, gruesome art – shining blue scales wrap tightly around the blue-tinted pages of the book, capped and held in place by tarnished silver caps that bear glittering blue sapphires engraved with grinning skulls. Within, the pages glitter subtly with the application of powdered scales, and bear greyscale depictions of manifold tortures upon varying specimens of merian descent.

an ivory journal embroidered with orchids

August 19, 2008

This delicate journal of ivory leather features a supple white cover that folds over itself at the front of the book, half-concealing a circular design of silken embroidery that depicts a black sphere against which a blood-red orchid blooms in vivid colour. Title and author curve in gilded calligraphy around top and bottom of the spine, curling tails ornamented with glinting motes of red garnet. Within, the pages are an ordinary shade of creamy paper, free of numerals or lines. The faint scent of wine and roses rises from this slim booklet, perfuming the air.

a stygian ledger studded with onyx

August 19, 2008

This dark ledger is bound in an unusual wood and leather cover that folds partways over the pages on the righthand side of the book to fasten via a silver clasp, moulded into the form of twisting tentacles, to the front cover. Delicate lines of gleaming black onyx, coruscating with subtle violent fires swirl across one side of the book, outlining a massive, one-eyed leviathan – opposite, a swirling robed figure is embroidered in midnight-blue stitching accentuated with silver, one skeletal hand raised in triumph to display a fiery eye of crimson opal. Within, the pages are a creamy vellum, divided with faint traceries of blue ink to denote lined writing surface and boxes for diagrams and graphs. A single stylised gas flame is pressed within the inside of the front cover, superimposed over a ghostly amaranth-and-cog device.
