a lambent vermeil viola inlaid with clockwork

February 26, 2009

Lambent vermeil has been used to craft this lightweight viola, pitch-black obsidian applied sparsely throughout its elements to create an august contrast. Sculpted into graceful lines, the belly of the viola has been inlaid in several places with small pieces of delicate clockwork machinery, notably at the bottom left and the upper right. Artificially tarnished to appear as if they have been subject to the ravages of time, the golden cogs and gears interlink and will turn and spin with but a slightest push. The areas beneath the clockwork elements have been heavily patinated to create an illusion of an open framework with filigree ornamentations blossoming around them graven in curving black lines. Further coalescing the royal hues, the obsidian fingerboard has been strung with aurulent strings and the chinrest cushioned with glistening black silk. Accentuating the whole, the scroll expands into the likeness of a shuttered gas lamp supported by a mischievous gargoyle with a powerstone set within the glass lantern suffusing the ambient area with a pale glow.

heavy burgundy brocade drapes

December 28, 2008

Open: Luminous rays of light filter through diaphanous golden curtains flanked by heavy drapes.
Closed: Stray motes of light sneak in through heavy burgundy drapes pulled close snugly.

Diaphanous silken lace of a pale golden hue has been used for the curtains, mesmerising swirls and symbols blossoming upon them. The curtains admit light freely, tinting it into luminous golden rays and themselves glistening bright gold. Drapes sewn from yards of rich and patterned brocade embrace the floor-kissing curtains on either side. The baroque burgundy of the fabric is magnified by the darker ornamental pattern upon it and the delicate golden embroidery of arabesque origin.

an ornate desk

September 24, 2008

Open: Pushed against a wall, an ornate desk of inlaid ravenwood rests here, its lid wide open.
Closed: Pushed against a wall, an ornate desk of inlaid ravenwood rests here.

Constructed of the finest ravenwood, this desk is of ornate and expensive design. Four slender legs rise from an ornamental base, designed to give the structure stability, and elaborately carved with prowling fiends. The writing surface is of leather, framed by a raised border of polished wood, and it acts as a lid to a shallow drawer beneath. Rising behind it, a pair of miniature hawthorn columns and a back-board, incised in golden tracery, support a smooth shelf about which, on the three further edges, a crenellated border protects its contents from becoming dislodged. On either side of the shelf, two wrought iron sconces bear fluttering candles.

a tapestry of the great betrayal

September 24, 2008

Fastened securely to the wall, a broad tapestry depicts the Great Betrayal in sumptuous colour.

Ringed with images of the soulless and the void, this tapestry depicts a verdant land of fountains and forests, brightly embroidered flowers and demure rabbits, bears and deer. At its centre, ringed with gold and silver threads, a glowing rainbow of multi-coloured beings stands assembled, bearing stereotypical expressions of mourning and anger. In front of them, twelve figures stand, bound in black cords. Glowing crimson, the masked figure of Fain stands at their fore, with azure Raezon on his left, and a tall and armoured figure on his right, wringing his gauntlets in despair. Below, and larger than the rest, a glowing merian-like figure of Meridian points an accusatory finger, his face split: anguished and exultant. Overcome with the ridiculousness of his situation, the figure of Fain laughs uncontrollably, while hanging above, in the wide arch of the void that borders the tapestry, a wide mass of ichor, wing and tentacle chews with a hooked beak on the prostrate figure of Amberle.

a ravenwood couch upholstered with scalps

September 24, 2008

Giving off a sickly stench of preservative, an elegant ravenwood couch sits here, upholstered with a patchwork of scalps.

Neatly sewn together onca frame of polished ravenwood, a multitude of scalps upholster this couch. Each seems to have been chosen for the copious hair upon it, and manes of varying consistency and hue make a patchwork of browns, blacks, greys and reds. The hair on each scalp has been lovingly combed, trimmed to an equal length, and treated with a sickly and malodorous preservative which stifles the air around it. The wooden frame is of an elegant and pleasing shape, curving backwoods along the top, and intricately carved with fluting lines and scrollwork. The legs are four carved demon’s feet, with iron talons which grip the floor and prevent the couch slipping or sliding across the ground.

a novelty furrikin keg

September 24, 2008

With each paw nailed to a leg of the basic wooden frame, this fox furrikin crouches in an unnatural pose. Long incisions, subsequently sewn together show where the furrikin was disembowelled, and similarly the fox head shows signs of removal and reattachment. Nevertheless, there is little to indicate how the large platinum barrel, the tap of which pokes incongruously from between the furrikin’s jaws, was first inserted. For the sake of decency, the creature’s genitals have been removed, and its anus has been sewn shut.

an armchair upholstered in merian scales

September 24, 2008

A shimmering armchair of merian scales rests here invitingly.

Atop a solid frame of wood, a sturdy layer of canvas has been wrapped, tucked, and pinned, creating a basic arm-chair. With pain-staking craftsmanship, merian scales have been individually sewn into the fabric, such that the entire chair shimmers and gleams with a silvery-blue sheen. The chair is smooth and slightly slippery to the touch, and gives off a dull aroma of rotting fish.

a jade pipe of writhing tentacles

September 21, 2008

Disturbing angles of verdant jade and writhing, contorted limbs form the curving bowl of this unsettling pipe, suckered limbs stretching upwards from beneath the pipe to curl in slick glory about the edges. Dark in shade, the stone of the pipe is streaked with sickly inclusions of brighter jade that lance through the darker backdrop. A swollen, elongated limb arches out in mute invitation from the bowl, forming the stem of the pipe; at the far reaches of the tentacle a mouthpiece of polished steel wraps about the end, engraved with the stylised image of a shattered amphora.

a blackened lute etched with a golden lotus

September 21, 2008

The form of this unusual lute is compose of hammered sheets of iron wrapped tenuously around sounding chambers of raw wood. Small studs of rusting metal delineate the outer shell, shivering at the slightest vibration of the tarnished silver strings that run the length of the blackened neck to the foot of the instrument. Bright against the rough, dark metal of the instrument, an acid-etched inlay of a golden lotus blooms, spreading bright petals outwards over the face of the lute and disgorging stylised fragments of golden petals that curl in spiraling designs upwards over the ravenwood-inlaid fingerboard. Delicate black marble tuning pegs linger at the filigreed scroll at the very end of the elegantly arched neck, their surfaces engraved with a simplified depiction of a shattered amphora.

an august walnut armchair of royal hues

September 3, 2008

Redolent of courtly lavishness, this exceptionally snug armchair tempts idle thoughts.

With aristocracy in mind, this lissom armchair has been sculpted from rich black walnut with utmost of grace and precision. The sinuous curves are pleasing to the eye and adequately comfortable to recline in as everything besides the frame of the armchair has been lavishly upholstered. Tufted velveteen of a palatine purple hue, that shifts to subtle indigo hues with but a glimmer of light, covers the armchair and armrests all the way to the clawed legs tapering from the sides. A single flat cushion compliments the whole, its entirety sewn from diaphanous silken brocade fabric of a pale golden hue.
